I found this button on Easter Sunday at a park in Wickford Rhode Island. It's 11/16" round and I can see a partial date on it as being "Dec 9" and "co" above but nothing else. The other side just has a design.
I know it's a long shot but maybe someone has found a similar one?
No, I havent cleaned it because Im not sure how.

Not sure of the button maker but it looks like it is mixed either with zinc or aluminum that's what causes that white looking corrosion I'm seeing & also looks like Dec. 9 1925 from the pic.So sometime after that is the only guess I have.
Take Care,
Pete, :hello:

I remembered the patent from another thread. Robberry found a similar patented button with the Dec 9, 1924 date on the back and Panama Mobile on the front. http://forum.treasurenet.com/index.php/topic,300687.0.html

Your welcome Bev, I dont know the company unless it can be cleaned up a bit but the button would be 1924-1939. Patents were good for 15 years I think. I dont know the best way to clean it. Aluminum Jelly maybe? :dontknow: Someone else may know.

I thought I read where aluminum jelly was dangerous to the user, but if not, would a hardware store carry something like that?

Yes Home Depot or any hardware store would carry it. I didnt know it was dangerous if used properly. You could always wear rubber gloves and you are using only a small amount. Read the label of course.

Im just guessing on how to clean it. I was hoping someone else would chime in to help. We have a section on cleaning. http://forum.treasurenet.com/index.php/board,70.0.html

Your button looks either aluminum, zinc or pewter. If its pewter, nothing will help clean it.

Hello,
I went to a civil war campsite Dec 15th 2011 and found the same button as shown. My button indicates Pat. Dec 09 1924....it is in very good condition.

Hey Bev, I have found a few of those metal 4 hole buttons, and from my research, many have been foreign made and were used on work clothes and overalls. Neat find  Breezie

Bev,

Aluminum jelly should only be used on toasted buttons. :laughing7:

CC Hunter

P.S. I think that button is in fact made of aluminum.
