Wow...I hope everyone is not as stumped as I am. The designs on the buckle are engraved or etched into the metal by hand. This was likely not mass produced, or if it was it was personalized at a later date. Any thoughts?

It is part of a two piece ladies buckle. ribbon or some other material was attached to the big loop. The small slot is for the male end of the other part of the buckle that had a similar or matching design. used up untill the 1940's in that style. Yours is probable early 1900's. Very nice.

Awesome. Thanks for your post, dg. So what I'm looking at here is really half a buckle? I wish the other half had been around somewhere, but I pounded that site to death. Odds are slim to none.

I would tend towards a late Victorian rather than an 1900s date based on the design, specially if not hallmarked. Some late pieces were not hallmarked but most were post 1900.

Exactly. Sometimes called a "butterfly" buckle. The complete buckle would have looked something like this:

Here's another one that was in Western & Eastern Treasures a while back.

I see... Thank you all so much. It was just a little puzzling there for a while based on its small size (partly because I only found half a buckle), ornate design, and composition. Not quite such an odd shape when you put both pieces together. Congrats all, and thanks again!

Case closed!

With all respect, I feel that this segment should be renamed "ASK PBK".

I seldom see him stumped and the answers are quick and concise.

That's mighty kind, but the honors this time definitely go to Dg39 and Dugupfinds.

I'm just the guy with the mop and bucket!
