This was found at about 9 inches deep in a yard that was formed over an old farm field.

It appears to be brass, 1.5 x 1.25 inches, 6 grams. There appears to be a remnant of a design on the front but barely and just around the edges.

Any thoughts?
Maybe some more cleaning to see if detail can be raised?

Thanks!

Man that looks old and cool...but i can`t tell u what it is...my guess is a Head Badge off an old bicycle or farm wagon

If I remember correctly (as these have shown up before) they are saddle decorations.

Nhbez is correct it is a saddle decoration shield ! more of less from the late 19th century but possibly also into the mid 19 C

Oh also too note the spot you found this in should be checked pretty good! From my experience where-ever a saddle shield like this is found chances are there may be a buckle or breast plate laying around. Saddle shields are hard too miss so the area you are hunting in more of less has not been hit hard. I know just about every spot where a saddle shield was found ended up being lot of good brass artifacts in the same area!

I'm thinking possible saddle decoration, or possibly a Musket / Pistol Thumb Escutcheon Plate. The photo shows one made from coin silver that dates to the revolution.

Oh, I'm pretty sure you have this pegged. Does the one in your picture also have a 3 prong mounting spot on the back?

This is either a saddle decoration or possibly an emblem off something like a fireman's hat. After all, the shield shape is pretty common. The lack of design on it tells me that the whole thing is probably a design/decoration for something else.

Thanks!

Yep they all have 3 prong mounting on the back ! They are or I guess i should say "were" common to find metal detecting I know i see these all the time the exact same one you have! My guess is they made thousands and thousands of them! If I get some time tomorrow I will try and research the company that made them! But honestly hit that spot you found this in hard any spot where good big brass artifacts are found you know there is gonna be more there!
