I got this at a rummage sale - $5.00 . I panted the gas tank with primer and put a new muffler on it .
I took it to my trusty Small Engine Repair Guy - he had it running in about 10 minuets . You have to wrap a rope , to start it .

He's in his late 60's and had never seen this engine before . I asked him if it might be for a Go-Cart . He said , No , it has a centrifical internal throttle . The engine controls the speed on its own - depending on the "load"

It is a 2-stroke ... so he recommended mixing the gas/oil a little strong .

The carb is a Tilotson , and the air filter is an Air Maze . He showed me some screw-holes where the ID plate once was . he took some pictures of it , but I have not heard back from him .

Any ideas on what this went to ? What year ?

washing machine maybe
The engine guy did mention that possibilty breifly , but the only 2 he'd seen were Maytag kick-starts .

But I wonder .....if it may have gone to a different brand ? Thanks mph

Try (johnson Utilimotor) Ca.1930. they made motors for washing mashines, and farm equip. before Elec. was available in the country. Also might be (maytag engine) for washing machines. :icon_scratch:

Re: Small Mystery Engine ?

found this information on another site (smokstak) :

""If your Jacobsen engine has the original Tillotson carburetor on it, you can go to the Tillotson carburetor listing on the small engine site and date the engine. In most cases the carb. model number is on the top of the carb.""

You mention that it has a Tillotson carburetor on it, maybe you can learn more, at least the year, by checking out the model number on the carb?

It may be of some help. Tillotson Carbs were used on a lot of small engines. I had one on my 52 fIRESTONE oUTBOARD. It may at least help you date it. Whats the numbers? http://www.tillotson.ie/till3.html

Here is a list of the engines Tillotson was used on. Click aftermarket.
Look all over the starter housing also may be a model number.

Re: Small Mystery Engine ?

Though it may be unlikely (because of the automatic throttle)....could it possibly have been used to run a reel mower?

Re: Small Mystery Engine ?

Whats it say on the air cleaner? Did you get those Tillotson numbers?

Re: Small Mystery Engine ?

It does look like a Johnson. It probably came from a Farmpal generator set?? We have an antique engine show this weekend, I'll see what I can find out. Tony
