small metal spool

We found this the other night. Its about 1 inch tall. Is it a spool for thread? How old is it? thanks for the help

Reminds me of one of those push in and turn to lock hickeys that hold some furnature together. Either way if it is cast pot metal as it appears it would not be that old.
