Hi all, found this small lead (?) thing this summer on an old site (17th). weights 2g for 1cm in diameter. Has "dents" in it on about half of the center hole.

Looks like it was a seal. Tony

I see where you are coming from on that, but it seems odd to me that the first pic seems to indicate a splined shaft. I think if that impression was made by a splined shaft, then the whatzit would have to rotate with the shaft. Every seal I've seen was fixed position while the shaft rotated. If that were the case on this item, you wouldn't see an impressions from the splines. Know what I mean?

Sorry but that is not a lead seal. That it the top to a Lead Head Nail. They were used to hammer down sheet metal roofs and prevent the holes from leaking. I am 99% sure that is what that is.

The squared hole could indicate that it was used with a carriage bolt. The have square shoulders. Tony

Sure looks like a bearing to me
The center looks to me is fit over a spline spindle, the hole doesn't look like its square hole

thanks for your thoughts everyone !
I've a found a pic of a lead head nail, but that doesn't quite fit with what I have (mine doesn't seem hammered, is carved on both sides and the hole shows clear dents marks that would fit over a spline spindle)

also I would have expected to find more than one if It was from a roof or old construction (but you knows !)

maybe some sort of bearing yes, still wonder what kind of machine and when did they used lead bearing like that ?
still would love to find another pic of something like that...
