Small lead item from 1830-1850 homesite in Wisconsin. What could it be?

Spent the afternoon yesterday digging at an old homesite that is now just a field in Southern Wisconsin. The farmer knows that the site dates to somewhere in the 1830 to 1850 range. Any idea what this lead object could be? (Penny for scale, writing on both sides, ridged edge, convex on both sides) leadthing.jpg

Just commenting so I can stay up on posts. I live in southwestern wisconsin, and and am a descendant of original settlers to the area. This peaks my interest to what it could be.

Just like Tony mentioned it is a seal, when the blank lead slug was wired to make the seal a pair of pliers with that design in the jaws was used to crimp the seal closed.

br529 002.jpg Found this lead seal last summer in a field here in North Carolina. This particular one is from a fertilizer / manure bag - mid 1800's
