Found this last Sunday on a colonial property where other early- to late-1700s items were found. It measures 2.25 inches across (though this measurement is in current misshapen form), weighs 36.2g, and I'm guessing lead b/c of its grayish, light color. It rang up as 80 VDI (copper) on my detector, though likely b/c of its density. It had 4 feet, with only 1 still intact. It looks rather crude. Any ideas as to age and/or purpose? Many thanks for looking.

I'm thinking probably pewter. Use? Your guess is as good as mine. Seems kind of small for a food bowl.

They used many kinds of melting pots. They were always on little legs. I know they used them For melting lead even into the mid 1900's. I don't have any definite answers .. Just a thought. image-2874737330.webp Example of one

Also a mortar bowl for crushing meds

It seems about the right size for a pewter master salt cellar.

Many thanks to all! Will mark this as solved, as I agree with the above based on size/pics. Thanks again!
