Does anyone know what this small glass negative would be used for? It is indeed negative, though the lighting is making it seem like a positive image. I’ve nver seen one this size. The photo itself is Mary Pickford from a 1916 issue of Photoplay magazine.
In case you come on more or you run into most any negative. Throw it on your flatbed scanner, scan it into Photo Shop or similar. Hit invert and you have a positive you can view or print. Or if you've got boxes of 35mm or 110 negs or slides, you can pickup dedicated neg scanners for under $40 bucks now. Turns days of work into a couple hours.
Glass negs do have a lot of interest. Had a small box sitting on my table of fairly roached ones. Guy didn't hesitate on $20ea price. Have sold others at a good price too!
I agree with those above! Newspaper pictures are typically "half tone positive" in Photoshop they would appear negative until reversed. Could be for theatre promo purposes.
February 1916, Photoplay, pg. 49 ... has this pic.
Miss Pickford was in so many movies and magazines, that she definitely was in the public eye, at the time.
This picture is somewhat "mundane" ? ... It's possible this is the only time it was used.
Photoplay and its photographers were professionals, ... they'd have no problem enlarging or sizing this negative to fit that page size.
Thanks everyone. I'm very familiar with the magazine/article. After a bit more digging... I believe it may (may) have been used for making RPPC postcards. But as noted, the photo is so mundane, why would they use that photo considering there are a bazillion more "professional" MP photos in the world. The reason I think it was used for postcards is there were a few other glass negatives (that I didn't care about, I just wanted this one) that I have researched and just about all of them I have seen on postcards. I did read that after 35mm became more prevalent, some postcard manufacturers did use 35mm negatives and just blew them up to size. So, I guess it's still a mystery, but could be postcard-related.
What do some of you people eat to be so darn smart ? Like I have said , I did have a stroke in 2016 and then a 2nd one just 9 months later in 2017 .
