I found this just a few hours ago outside a one room schoolhouse in upstate New York. It is only about 15mm. Is the scene pictured connected to anything or is it just a generic type image? It looks sort of familiar but I'm not sure....

Thanks ;D

Re: Small Button from an Old Schoolhouse

The front is the state seal of Ohio.. being an iron back, im not sure of the age, but there were Civil war Ohio buttons but I would guess post-war on that one. I'm sure someone with a button book will be able to verify whether I'm correct about the timeframe

just checked this site and guess the 3-piece ohio buttons are all post-war :dontknow: if there is a period version, he doesn't list it

Aha! Thank you!! Great to know it has some significance.

Yep I would think post CW too but still interesting to wonder how it got to that little rural schoolhouse which is pretty far from Ohio.

things always turn up in odd spots.. now that i think of it, there were ohio seal breastplates and beltplates but I think I remember hearing a debate about whether there were actual uniform buttons also.. being an iron back, some of the period kepi buttons had iron backs if i remember right.

Thanks for this info :icon_thumleft: I had no idea the Ohio Civil War buttons were so scarce. I just found this - which is the same scene and size as mine but the back being different I'm not counting any chickens :laughing7: I still think mine is post War. But learned something new today....

I agree that your Ohio State Seal cuff button is post-civil-war era. First... it is what button-collectors call a "wide rim" 3-piece. The closest match for the DETAILS in the scene on your button's front (such as the left-side mountain peak being the same height as the sun, and the riverboat's shape) is a cuff-size version of button OH-3 in the Albert button-book. The rusted-out iron back in your button was probably the Goodwin's Patent ironback (1875 and 1878), which is the most-frequently-seen ironback on 3-piece State Seal buttons.
