I've been sitting on this item(not literally) for about 6 months or so and since I'm not out in the woods, I figured I'd send it out to everybody and see if I can get an ID. It was found in central Va. at a 1790's home site that has produced a few nice civil war items. It is a little over 4 1/2 inches long, 1 inch wide and made of heavy approx. 1/16th brass. there are no markings on the back and the holes are slightly countersunk. I don't think it's modern because it was relatively deep so...... Hope somebody (cannon ball guy??? r u there? ) can put a label on this one. Thanks for looking and Happy Hunting!

I used something similar many years ago. It was attached to a wooden pole and was used to dip into an underground storage tank to see how full it was.
