Sleigh bells ring, are you list'nen? Pictures added

I haven't posted much lately because I haven't been out or found much worth posting. Ordinarily, today's finds also don't warrant a post, except for one. I'll post a picture later because Mrs. halfdime took the camera card to work with her. I found a 1" bell with lettering on it: "PAT Oct 24 76 & MAY 14 78" I presume this means the 1800's. The bell still has a little ball inside and makes a pleasant sound; I couldn't tell you what key ;D. It has a flattened top to it, and appears to have been attached to leather at one time. I've seen these described as crotal bells on this forum, but couldn't find that word in my dictionary. Now that I've found this, I'm curious. Also found a 16 and 25 wheat for good measure. All these things were found at the silver farm, which hasn't been yielding much silver lately.

I got a picture of the bell and another little item I found yesterday. It almost looks like some kind of syringe, with patent dates of 1910 and 1919 on it. Any ideas?

Re: Sleigh bells ring, are you list'nen?

Major George W. Tucker and possibly the American Ring Company: The maker's mark on many (but not all) "patent" bells is a diamond with a small dot in the center. Located at the base of the bell, the mark is usually found in conjunction with patent dates of "PAT. OCT 24. [18]76 & MAY 14. [18]78" or just the single patent date of "PAT. OCT 24. [18]76".

Tucker's patents described the manufacture of a sturdy machine-stamped bell. The bell was probably produced by the American Ring Company of Waterbury, Connecticut. Tucker, a prominent citizen of Waterbury and officer in American Ring, was dismissed in disgrace from the company in 1886 for embezzling a substantial sum of money

I'm list'nen, 1/2, but I can't hear 'em. :-\ Being that we don't have sleighs in Bama, I probably never will. :'(

;) Sounds like a GREAT find though! :) Nana

Wow, Gypsy; you seem to have nailed it. There is a diamond within a diamond; I assume that is the maker's mark you mentioned. Thanks for helping out with the information!
