Not a slave tag...but may be associated with a CW regiment.

Was this found in Ohio? OVM ...Ohio Volunteer Militia ??

Hey thanks for the reply. No not Ohio pretty close though. I got it at an auction in West Virginia. It was a bed and breakfast auction. I've got another one I'm trying to upload a pic of now.

That's a great article. Thanks a bunch. So what I've got is more than likely a repro slave tag and a civil war tag? Wonder what the value might be on them. I saw one like the slave tag that sold for $160.

There's an "Augustus Croft" at the link posted by cw0909:
Entry first, followed by details on 155th deployments (below).
Note the 155th was at New Creek and Martinsburg, WV - which may explain how it came to be in a West Virginia auction.

I have never heard of a slave tag originating in Tennessee. I could be wrong, but I don't think so.

They actually announced at the auction today that Ken Farmer from antiques roadshow looked at these and said they were authentic. Now whether that's true or not idk. Lol. I think the one is like a dogtag. It is old, I know that for sure. The other one I would think is a reproduction. Like duggap said I don't think any authentic ones come from Tennessee. From what little bit of research I've done, all the real ones come from Charleston, SC.

Cool tags whatever they are and yes Charleston, SC was the center of the slave trade back in the day.

Here's one that's looks very similar to your tag. It sold on eBay for $160.00! Burned!

Yeah I saw that one freebird. That's what made me go ahead and roll the dice on them. I'd be happy with that for mine. Lol. Authentic or not there's a lot of people that collect them and pay decent money even for some repros. I listed mine tonight. Just gonna be honest about em and hope for the best.

I can make one of those in about 10 minutes with scrap copper and a die set...and the patina is easy to apply too.
