hello all; i'm new to this site and would really appreciate some help with the identity of some artifacts from mexico. i have two 10x2 in. full grooved { 1w/ multiple grooves} weapons that are supposed to be aztec. from what i was told they were used to dispatch persons for sacrificial purposes [ie. slavekillers]. i really have no reason to doubt their authenticity, everything else the man had was original and could be authenticated. however i have searched everywhere i can think of and can't find any info or pics of what i have. i have seen pics that were simular but not the same. the pieces show some wear and seem to have been used at some point. one has an axe type edge on one end and roundish point on the other end. the other one has axe type on both ends. i will try to post pics. if it don't work, any help finding pics of sutch things would be greatly appreciated.

A new member lorddean13 says he has completed studies specializing in pre-colombian maybe he can help.

We have another member from Peru but I forget his name may be able to help.

Yeah, I don't know enough about them to offer any input myself. Now that we have the photos though, someone should be able to offer some help.

The one on the bottom left looks like pre-Columbian American war club head. The bottom right one looks like a Pre Colombian Jadeite Celt. The top left looks like a Pre-Columbian Mezcala Stone Axe head. The last one the black one looks like it has been done in the same design but the condition of these makes me think they may not be old. They do make contemporary "old" axe heads the tell tale sign in the unneeded amount of grooves. I would suggest bringing them to an antiquities dealer or archeologist and have them looked at. They are in amazing condition. I have seen these types of items sold to tourists before they do have a value based on their artisan aspect but they really look to new. I will post a pic of some of the ones I have seen before. 40801.jpg

I would definitely have them checked out though. I could be wrong and they could be from around 300 BCE. That is when these tools were used by the Meso-American cultures. They used them for everything, from cutting down trees and farming, to killing people and animals for ceremonies. I think the top left one might be more ceremonial because of the unique shape of the tool and the ornate mounting grooves. I would get them double checked for age but what you have there is a nice collection of Meso-American Axes, Celt, and War Club.

to all you guys that helped and tried to help; i salute you; and to lorddean, for all the info and knowledge, many thanks. as i said , this gentelman had several original pieces including clay figures that were broken during excavation, obsidion celts. matates of various shapes, and meteorites, just to mention a few. i tried to buy a 41# meteorite from him 2 yrs ago but didn't have the money at the time. he is from mexico and according to some of the people that have delt with him, he is an honest man. i think he has people finding this stuff for him and makes 1 trip a year into the states. i am saving my money for next years finds. also, if anyone could recomend a reputable dealer or archioligist that i could get to examine these pieces it would help me a great deal as i'm not familiar with such things. again; thanks to all who helped. rustynuts
