Bryan, Ohio
Detector(s) used
Ace 250 and a Bounty Hunter or two
Found this in Northwest Ohio, 6" or 7" deep, near a metal pole building, in dirt that probably was excavated in the last 20 years - reads "Dime" on my Bounty Hunter Quick Draw, very dense, NON megnetic, appears to be metalic "crystals" inside with a stony? exterior.

It could be corrosion around it I suppose but to me it looks like a quartz - would the inside of a blob of lead solder appear like this if broken apart? - Thanks.

(It was in one piece when I found it - I broke the pieces off)

Probably pot metal waste. Looks like a lead & tin mix. Some sort of lead-alloy anyway.

Welcome from the UK :)

Here is a link- Do you see your county in the picture?

http://www.ohiohistorycentral.org/entry.php?rec=1359

I would say possibly galena- lead ore. Crystals cubic? Does the white piece have a slow fizz with Hcl or muratic acid(dolostone)? It does appear natural because of the associated white mineral or dolostone. Galena would have a gray streak on a porcelain surface(non glazed backside of your toilet bowl.)

The lower picture is not clear but it does appear to have some holes in it? suggesting a furnace.

I have a lot of ore specimens which are half ore/half slag.

Galena will sound off well on a detector.

I just show a Gold Fever Show yesterday and Tom was at a Silver mine in Alaska. He was looking for galena that had silver in it. Your piece looks just like what he was showing to us on his show. So It could very possibly be sliver.

Thanks to all - it was very interesting to read your ideas.
Galena fits the bill - according to the link Bakergeol posted, Galena is not "confirmed" in Williams County (the very Northwest County of Ohio) , but we're only a few counties away from areas that are confirmed.

I'll have to go back to the area where I found this and see if there is any more to be found.
