I have an 1858 small letter Flying Eagle cent that has been slabbed by PCI. Grading strictly by wear, I would place it as AU, because the wear is almost non-existant. There is barely any wear on the breast feathers and the closest wingtip, with the details of the feathers still readily visible.
However, it does have corrosion on it. It may have been dug. The corrosion is dark in spots with no green coloring anywhere. All lettering and detail is sharp and visible on both sides.
I personally would drop a grade for the corrosion myself, but I would think this coin rates a XF grade, dropped one grade from AU.
My questions are:
PCI graded this coin as VF 35. Does this seem about right? Or are they known for undergrading?
And do you think it would be worth cracking it out and submitting it to another service?
Scanner comes out fuzzy, unfortunately, and I can't get a decent shot with my camera, but here it is....
