Skunked literally Fri, but not Sat/Sun's hunts. CW Artillery button, POD button, IHP

Friday night my dog got into a scuffle with a skunk just outside of our back patio. The whole house stunk all night. Tried to find a new site Saturday in the woods for about 90 minutes, again totally skunked, nothing. Decided to hike over to my 1800's site that has been slowing down, no coins but my first dandy button and a nice 1870 dated suspender buckle, my first with tangs still attached.


Here is everything from Saturday including another old thimble and a ball button.

On Sunday decided to hit the other side of the park (woods) and found a new productive site. Nothing special on the map, but near where I found a ton of stuff this spring. Best find of the weekend is this button. I think this is a Civil War artillery button, found in Pittsburgh! Also found this really old Postal Service button. And the last target of the weekend was finally a coin, 1902 Indian Head, I'll take it. Here is everything from Sunday. The heart shaped pendant thing, looks really old, not sure if this is a piece of jewelry or something else.

That's a really nice artillery button. And you definitely got one of them more interesting post office Department buttons. I found one but it just simply had the letters pod and nothing else.. congrats

sweet buttons, they are very cool finds and then I really like the suspender buckle, I haven't found one quite like that one yet. thimbles, they represent a lot of fixing or darning in the day, back when flour and feed sacks were used to make clothes with. they didn't have Walmarts back then most people had to sew, heck, one of my grandfathers loved to quilt and had his own frame.

Thx Kurios1! I've have a coin display rack that I have been trying to fill all year, but I need to create a display for the buttons. In many ways they tell a better story of the site.

Thx Relic Lover! It's mind boggling to me what can pop out of old dirt. About a 5 minute hike from where I found the CW Artillery button yesterday is where I found a War Of 1812 shoulder plate earlier this Spring. This is outside of Pittsburgh where there were no active battles, just soldiers returning home and losing parts of their kit in their yard which is now overgrown local park woods...
I had no idea what P.O.D. stood for, but a quick Google of POD buttons shows a whole range of postal buttons. I was not able to find and date an exact match, were you able to find a good resource for your Postal button?

That's still a great hunt, you don't see those buttons everyday. I know I rather find something instead of nothing even if that means no silver or gold.

I did a bit of research when I found mine. Most of them seem to be from the late 1870s and 1880s

Nice work considering the heat, rain, and humidity we had to deal with this weekend. The button is definitely civil war period. I like the POD button, I've never dug one. Suspender clips are always cool to dig, they have so many interesting designs.
