Just an FYI, I use to work at a ski resort in a former life and you wouldn't believe the coins, rings and watches those newbie face plants would shake loose. Every morning after the season was over I'd walk down the slopes and pick up several dollars in coins that the sun had uncovered. Can you imagine how much more I missed? :o

Ya know I thought about that also, however, I don't think there are any ski resorts in my area. (old OR new) But I betcha they are loaded with lost coins and possibly some jewelry ;D

Absolutely true. I found a mans gold watch that unfortunately went through the business end of a power snow tiller, :o I bought a new band for it and wore it for years. Everyday the sun would melt another inch and new coins would appear.

Rube, where would the coins be? Under the lifts? Ski areas? Any other hotspots? I just remembered, there is one about 25 miles from me. I don't think they use it anymore, NOR do I know how big (or small) it is, OR how old it is, but its worth checking out when this darn weather gets better.........Rich

Actually anywhere people would fall. Beginners slopes should be a good place to start. On the intermediate and expert trails I would look at the bottoms of steep sections called "headwalls". The resort I worked at took no soil erosion measures so check the gullies at the bottoms of these sections. I also used to check under the lift lines, but here I found only clothing, ski poles, or the occasional dollar bill.
It takes lots of money to go skiing, and lots of quarters for all those lockers.

Hey guys, I can vouch for the "ski area" being a good detecting spot. Up here in Potter County we have Mt.Denton (Denton Hill Ski Area). I was told by a metal detector guy (doesn't do it anymore) that he used to go up there every spring and always found hoards of coins and many rings. I plan to go to that area as soon as it gets a little warmer (hard to do detecting through 18 inches of snow base). We'll see what turns up in about a month.
Also, one other area that will be good for only about another month...Lyman Lake, a favorite boating, fishing, and camping area, has had the lake drained for about two years while they build a new dam. I would have been there sooner, but I only got into this detecting thing in December. When the dam is completed, they will fill the lake up again, and I doubt if it will ever be drained again in our lifetime. I am sure this will be the last chance to detect the bottom of the lake before it is filled up again this summer...potter poker

Finally got to the Denton Hill Ski area for about half an hour last Sat (Apr.14). Checked out the area around one chair lift, found 3Q, 2D, 2P, two of the coins just laying on the top of the ground, all clad. Guess no one's been there yet this spring except me. Conclusion: good coinage around the lift areas where skiers line up to get on. Will get back there soon...pp

yes it is a good spot to look,i have been doing very well, nothing very old but still filling a pocket, under the lifts are best so far, snow tubbing is doing better, here in northeast pa we have many ski areas very close together...thought i was the only one to think of it.will post pics soon.good luck hunting
