Instead of incessantly posting in "What Is It" for help identifying things of no value, I figured I'd show off my finds. Although I've had a BountyHunter for years, I never really used it. But about six months ago, I got a Garrett 200 and have been really hooked ever since. I'm lucky in that I'm a work-from-home employee (even in non-pandemic times), so I can go often
Almost all of this is from the past six months and is limited to my yard and to a 40-acre plot of land that my neighborhood owns. Until recently, I'd really hunted in a very random fashion, but thanks to some of the advice here, I've begun to get smarter and, for instance, have used vintageaerials.com to identify three old houses that used to stand on that property as late as 1960, but are no longer there.
There is basically nothing here of value. Yes, that's an old broom handle. And lots of slag. And a lock and a big nut. And also a very large iron cotter pin. But it's been really fun! What's even better, I've given the Bounty Hunter to my 14-year-old boy and he's started to really take an interest along with me. One night not too long ago, we stayed out til 10:00, hunting by headlamp, because we'd found a mini coin dump.
Anyway, I just recently came up with a metal-detecting slogan. The story: I was out with my boy in the middle of those woods, and it was hot, and there were a lot of bugs and poison ivy. He was complaining (and I kinda was too, under my breath), when I stopped and said, "Son, take a look around you. We are in the middle of a beautiful forest, by ourselves, spending time together hunting junk for fun because we have been blessed with enough money to buy a few detectors. We'll go home in a little bit to a nice, big, comfortable house in a safe neighborhood. We're cooking steaks on the grill tonight. We live in the greatest country in the history of the world. We don't want for food or clothing or family. We're luckier than 99% of the people in the world."
Even *I* thought to myself, "Great speech, dad!"
So it made me think about metal detecting: "This hobby will never make me rich, but it's made my life richer than ever."
