I posted last night on this topic for the first time. A backhoe turned some dirt over in my backyard (house built in 1847) and I found just one of these insignias/uniform pins yesterday and posted last night. Then I found five more out there today w/in a few feet of the spot I found yesterdays insignia!!! I thought that was pretty cool but whay were they all thrown away? I also found this old marble and this penny (1892) and these two things w/ holes in them. We'll, the response to the post yesterday of the first insignia was that they're prob. pre WWII but post turn of the century b/c the military didn't adopt the insignia till 1902. Makes sense to me but....why do you see civil war items w/the insignia? Someone pointed out the attachments between the difft parts of the insignias and said that's different and why they may be a little older than wwII. Ok - I'm a total rookie and appreciate all of your time. I've really enjoyed looking through all the posts and best of's. What an interesting group of people...I'm now dying to buy a metal detector.....

Hello TMJ, there were variations of this symbol that looked alot like it during the CW, but this particular symbol was not officially used until after the turn of the 20th century. The are super cool finds either way you cut it and I guarantee that if you get a metal detector that you will find more things right there in that little honey hole of yours ;) ;) ;) Good job and thanks for posting items for us to see.

Nice finds. I bet you could find a lot of things there with a metal detector. HH Sonny
