SUNSET BUTTE ... a party of soldiers left FORT MEADE in the BLACK HILLS carrying a payroll to FORT KEOGH and disappeared. In 1901 a local found a charred Army wagon and three revolvers marked US. source PAGE 5, THE TH-ERS EXPRESS, LATE FALL 1985
BISMARCK AREA ... 7TH CAVALRY CAMPSITE .... MRS. NASH was a Mexican laundress with the 7th Cavalry. She kept being robbed and deserted by her husbands. She was a favorite of GENERAL CUSTER'S wife. She died in the summer of 1878. Her last husband was CORPORAL JOHN NOONON, the aide to COLONEL TOM CUSTER. She was found to be a man. Her "husband" was taunted unmercifully. He told a reporter on the BISMARCK newspaper that he swore he married a woman. One month after she died NOONON shot himself in the heart in front of witnesses. source PAGE 37, THE BEST OF THE OLD WEST - VOLUME 1 BY MARION MCMILLAN HUSEAS (1992)
