BURLINGTON COUNTY - COLD SPRING SWAMP ... JOE MULLINER'S gang of REFUGEES made their headquarters here. His group was as large as 100 men. The actual site was an island in the Mullica River. His wife lived in a cabin on the mainland and he trained his dog to act as a courier and to swim the river using a dog collar with a secret compartment. MULLINER was captured at a dance in present NESCO. He was held in BURLINGTON and tried, found guilty and hanged on GALLOWS HILL. When he came to trial WHIGS and TORIES both testified against him.
