WASHINGTON COUNTY - MACHIAS ... pirate CHARLES (SAMUEL) BELLAMY ran a colony of pirates here. He anchored the "WHYDAH" about three miles inside the mouth of the MACHIAS RIVER near a beach that lay between two hills. He mounted five cannon behind breastworks to command the river. source PAGE 57, THE HUNTER BY JOHN J. LEANE, YANKEE, MARCH 1971
CUMBERLAND COUNTY - RICHMOND ISLAND ... in 1855 a tenant farmer broke a ceramic jar while plowing. Inside were more than two dozen (30) English gold and silver coins dated between 1558 and 1649. The farmer gave the jar and coins to the land owner who gave them to the MAINE HISTORICAL SOCIETY. The coins and a gold signet ring were thought to have been owned by trader WALT BAGNELL. BAGNELL moved to the area in 1628 and cheated the Indians so badly that they killed him in 1631. (These dates DO N0T add up and the BAGNELL cache HAS NOT been found SEZ ME). source PAGE 112, COIN WORLD, 2 JUNE 1997
