Opposing tribal factions, who had not been consulted before the sale, ordered his death; and he is believed to have buried the money between his cabin and Indian Springs. MCDUFFIE COUNTY - CLARK HILL RESERVIOR ... is located on the LITTLE RIVER. At the site of the old mill is gold. Some think it may be under water. Gold was first found by two englishmen who persuaded a local plantation owner named Griffin to buy the land. In 1830 Griffin bought out the other two. He built a small mill in 1833 on the WILKES COUNTY side of the river. By 1834 he had milled $80,000 in gold. In 1847 Griffin accidentally killed himself when his pistol discharged while he was mounting his horse. His $100,000 gold cache remains unfound. source PAGE 5, WHERE TO LOOK FOR BURIED TREASURE IN THE SOUTHERN STATES - PART II BY ERNEST M. ANDREWS, NTHL NEWSLETTER, VOLUME 1, NUMBER 2 (SUMMER 1969)
