ShadyDigger, Can you tell me about the Tesoro Silver uMax? I've been in this hobby for about seven months now and still haven't found silver. My Garrett Ace 250 doesn't seem to go very deep.

Love the way you post each day's finds -- reading your post makes me decide to detect my beach today instead of cleaning the apartment! Your current detector will find you both silver & gold just as my bottom-of-the-line little Bounty Hunter has done -- the silver & gold is there and you'll find it. So if I were you I wouldn't invest in a new detector anytime soon. My silver & gold finds have all been dug amid much trash, except for two surface silvers. Have fun & keep us posted! Andi

Thanks for the encouragement, Andi. The only silver I have ever found is a small earring. There is nothing old where I detect, so there's not much chance of finding any silver coins. No matter. I'm a happy camper if I can come home with a fistful of clad coins. I find plenty of silver coins in coin rolls, so I'm able to get silver out of circulation rather than out of the ground. Like you say, I think the fancy detectors might be somewhat overrated, so I have no intention of buying a fancier machine anytime soon.

Hi there- I use the ace also. Love it. On trashy areas I notch out everything bar the last 5 bars.(silver) Works a treat. Just got a deteknix x-pointer, and it quarters the recovery time. 80 bucks, it's the best thing ever. Worth considering!

2-21-15: 3501 Navajo Way: 16 coppers (including 5 wheaties), 5 zincs, 3 dimes, 1 quarter; 25 coins: $.76. Also found a Yamaha motorcycle key. My hunting buddy, Rick, found a 1948-S Roosevelt dime.
2-23-15: 3501 Navajo Way: back yard: 10:57 AM-12:30 PM: 8 coppers (including 4 wheats), 5 zincs, 2 dimes, 3 quarters; 17 coins: $1.08. Also found a 2007 Canadian $2 coin.
2-24-15: 2300 Santa Clara Ave: Very few targets, a few coins. 1809 Wengert was only there about 15 minutes before being chased off by a guy from the listing brokerage. 1840 S. 17th St.: 2 coppers, 3 zincs, 2 dimes, 2 quarters; 9 coins: $.75.

It appears that you are plugging right along (no metal detecting pun intended) and steadily making finds! It won't be long until you can invest in a much better and deeper seeking metal detector. Congrats! I will give some caution. You might not want to advertise (post) where you have made finds as to not give away the locations to other detectorists. While it is good to sometimes help out fellow detectorists or even have a metal detecting bud, some folks take advantage of others research and hard work and use such information that you have posted for their own gain. This could spell many days of failure for you ahead, so use caution!

Do you have any swimming holes near you? If so, then you might want to check out some of these areas! While your' Garrett Ace is by no means waterproof, you can search the dry areas where folks lay and lounge around and if the coil on your' metal detector is waterproof, you can submerge it in water. Grant you, good target signals will be hard to determine due to the mineralization noise but with persistence...patience and some skillful tuning, you might just score some really nice finds in the shallow water areas.

Grant you, good target signals will be hard to determine due to the mineralization noise but with persistence...patience and some skillful tuning, you might just score some really nice finds in the shallow water areas.

Thanks for the tips, Frank. Las Vegas is a city of 2 million, but was only 8,000 in 1940 and 20,000 in 1950, so consequently, older areas are very limited. I've been hunting older houses like crazy. I found my first silver about six weeks ago, but haven't struck any more since then. Today, for example, I pulled six wheat pennies and several early sixties pennies out of an old back yard, (house built in 1954) but didn't manage any silver. Tomorrow I'll go back and try the front yard. Your swimming hole suggestion is a good one. Lake Mead is not far from here, and a popular place for swimming and water sports. I've yet to try water hunting. I have a killer site all picked out that I'll be detecting the next time I get a full day, which I have researched. It's been abandoned since 1973, and used probably since the 1940's, so most of what is there would be old. Can't wait to detect it, and certainly won't be sharing the location with anyone other than my detecting buddy. I know the Ace 250 isn't very deep. I grew up in a 1914 house in Idaho, and detected my old yard, but found that the 1970's stuff was five inches down. There had to be deep silver in that yard, but the 250 couldn't reach it. What deep machine would you suggest? Here in Vegas, the targets don't seem as deep for some reason. I find wheat pennies usually only 2-3 inches down.

Good luck on your upcoming hunt of the older property! I also wanted to mention that if you check out some swimming holes on Lake Meade or other Lakes, make sure that there are no restrictions about metal detector use in or out of the water. Here, most of the Lakes are under the authority of TVA (The Tennessee Valley Authority, a Government Entity) which built and maintain the Dams, the production of Hydro-Electricity and governs the waters and the adjacent TVA owned lands and metal detecting is strictly prohibited. This is mainly because they do not want Civil War relics and other relics dug up. Surface finds are okay but no metal detecting or digging is allowed.

As far as a better, deeper seeking metal detector is concerned. There are lots of great machines that go deep and help folks make some great finds. If you are looking for something not too expensive that will still do almost what some of the most expensive metal detectors can do, then I would recommend a White's GMT which will not only find coins and relics but is also one of the better Gold machines out there. Also, the Minelab Sovereign Elite, Sovereign GT and E-Trac Models, Fisher Gold Bug and I believe the F-75 Models and Garrett AT Pro and AT Gold Models can often be picked up at decent prices and all are excellent metal detectors. Some of these are also decent to excellent in finding Gold, if you ever decide to Gold Nugget shoot.
