Silverplate Reticulated can, says "Search Light" and many patents!

This little can is a mystery to me. I thought it was a muddy crushed can till I took a second look. The measurements are 3 3/4" in diameter and maybe 2" thick when placed back together but it's a little crushed.
There are many international patents on it with dates in the area of 1896 or possibly 1796? The end date is just '96 and US patents started in 1790.
I tried to get a clear shot of the patent list but it's tough. I see countries such as England, France, Canada, Belgium and Germany. The first line is a US patent with possibly a number and the next line says, "MODEL C" Then the patents are in two columns. In the first column one patent says, "PATENTED IN U.S.A. April 10 - 94"
My son and I have been clicking on the images for each patent dated April 10 1894 (800+) and havent found anything yet.
I thought maybe a ladies compact but the patent info is the inside of it so that wont work. The name, "Search Light" is so general that nothing comes up pertaining to anything even close.
This is a good one that should a few!

Great ID, Taz42o :icon_thumright:

Although your's is the Model C, here's some pics from a "D" model to put your 2 pieces into perspective. The decorative top cap has the Search Light name, the inner vent cap has the patent info, and when both are removed, gives you access to the burner/reflector chamber.

The Search Light bicycle lantern was manufactured by the Bridgeport Brass Company, Connecticut

Neat find!
always check those "muddy crushed cans"

I was hitting and old farm field that was near a busy road - we used to pick up 5-6 crushed cans that got plowed under
and read off as 1/2 dollars or silver dollars on our meters every time we hit this place - because most of the big stuff has been taken out from here - we usually just get small coins and buttons and pieces of relics
when we get these large blasts - my hunt partner and I will usually yell out -"hey I got a silver dollar here" - meaning we got yet another deep torn up squashed can

so I get a deep target reading once again as a silver dollar - i dug down about 1 1/2 feet and pulled up this crushed, folded silvery piece that was packed with mud - quickly dropped it in my pouch and moved on - bout 50 yrds away I get another deep silver dollar reading
dig down close to 2 feet and pull another twisted folded squashed silvery piece packed with mud - as i go to put it into my pouch - I knock some of the dirt out and I saw what looked like an etched pattern - I brushed more of the mud off and found thta it had etched flowers in it - I tried to unfold it a little and saw it had a design on one whole side of flowers in a pot - I reached in and pulled the other similar piece out and found a pattern on it also
turned out to be a huge sterling silver compact that would have had a mirror in one side and powder puff probably in the other
each side has at least an ounce of silver and that is why they rang off in the silver dollar range
got to wonder if others had found and threw back thinking it was junk
glad I take out everything possible - glad I gave it a second look

Re: Silverplate Reticulated can, says "Search Light" and many patents!

Wow, great story! I keep a good size box in the back of my jeep and throw everything "trash" in it. Then once in a while I go through it, separating copper and interesting stuff. I try my best to give things a second or third look!

Kuger, you are a bad influence! I've been going through the us patent website looking at things from jan to jan and checking out drawings like you posted! I've figured out that the patent code for clasps, buttons, buckles, suspender clips and similar start with the code 24... I've been checking it all out and printing the ones that I've found! It's a blast!

As far as I know the numbers just get higher each patent. There is no code that I know of.

The drawings I posted are 2 of your US patents from the Google patent site . I didnt search the others. The older patents are stamped month, day and year instead of a number. My search words are highlighted in yellow.
