I was at an older home foundation out in the middle of the deep woods. I can see were the steps went into the house and the old stone foundation covered in moss. I have no idea what happenned back in the day. I found it while I was out turkey hunting and went back with the MD. No trash, a ton of big iron, I'll take pictures next time I'm there, it's old. So I finally get a nice high tone on the 350 and about three inches down I find this blob. It's not really heavy for it's size. I tried the ice test on it and ice melts on it as soon as it touches it. I just scrubbed it off with water and a toothbrush. melted silver maybe? perhaps the place burnt down years ago. it would be a relic hunters dream place. I was just trying to find some coinage. its not like lead or solder chunks I've found in the past.

Do you have acid test kit for gold and silver?

no acid kit. am looking at them online...something I think I should have around...for melted blobs....haha.

Wet it with water, wrap it tightly in aluminium cooking foil. If it's silver it will make cracking noises, and smell of eggs.

Robert.

Robert, I never knew that. See I learn something new here almost every time I visit. Hope it pops like popcorn and stinks to the high heavens when you wrap it in foil.

Hello yes, what you're doing is basic electrolysis. A very quick way to test for good silver. And also a safe method to clean good silver coins.

no cracklin....no smell....looks like it goes in the " oh thats cool " pile...thanking everyone for your help.

I had a huge bonfire recently, most of the items were already in a pile that the previous owner of my house left behind. Cleaning up the mess after burning I found a lot of chunks just like those. Mine were aluminum, and I'm 99% sure that yours is too.

I found this piece at an old house site that burnt down in the 1890's

I have done all the DIY tests at home, and all indications are it's silver.
I'm still not sure and I also think it might be pewter.

I tried the silver foil method mentioned above and nothing, so I tried a silver coin and it still did nothing.
I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong? Does it take time to react?

Cheers

idunno...i didnt get anything either with the tests.....mine looks different than yours....yours is nicer than mine....one thing my pics dont show is its shiny like a coin would be...thats why i was a little confused but tend to agree that mines melted aluminum...maybe I'll find the real stuff tommorrow...I didnt find one piece of trash at the old homesite either which made me wonder what it was. This place is easily over a hundred years old, back in the woods, one of those places you wouldn't expect to find a melted blob....I'm going back tommorrow just to see what I can find...deep woods off and not a single tick today...happy dance !!!

Hello should react after about 1 min. Is the coin good silver, or low silver content ?. Are you wetting the item with water before wrapping it in the foil ?.

Thank you, it does work I just didn't wait long enough.

Cheers

So are you saying the blob is silver? Or you got the technique to work on a piece of know silver? Just wondering cause that sures looks like the melted aluminum I pick up on occasion

My blob is NOT silver....I think bobfinds got it to work on his chunk of metal though. His looks alot different than my melted aluminum.
