Friday was a good day. While I was driving to work I noticed a piece of property being cleared out. Trees being cut down, ground being loosened up, so I pulled over. Through the clearing I could see what looked to be a HUGE old oak tree, some water in the distance, and an old barn. There was a 'land for sale' sign, so I wrote down the number.
At about 11 am I got the nerve to call up to ask the realtor who the land owner was. He was very nice, and it turns out the land owner was his father. Not only that, but he was meeting his dad for lunch, and said he'd be happy to ask if I could go detect the property. I was on pins and needles for a few hours, and then got the call. He gave me permission to go and hunt the land. Turns out it is about 25 acres. I was pumped.
Got up this morning and had to work, but brought everything with me so that I could detect when I got off at 3.
I changed clothes and sped off to the site. First, I started around the oak tree. This thing was MASSIVE. One of the largest I've seen. I started getting hits all over the place so I started digging. Well, apparently as huge as it is, it was a great makeshift tree stand. I dug a few 30-.06 bullet shells and some pull tabs and decided to move on for now.
So, I went to the barn. Apparently some vagrants had been using it as shelter, judging by the dirty mattresses and broken bottles all around it. Anyways, I concluded it was a deer hunting camp from sometime in the last 30 years. After digging a few rusty Coors cans, a steel knife, and bean cans I decided to move towards the water.
First hit was piece of farm iron, a plow tip. At least it wasn't 5 year old trash. Then, a hit my first coin...an impressive 1974 penny sitting on top of the grass near a receipt and a Pepsi can. Someone had dropped it fishing. But, it was a coin at least.
A few shot .44's and .22's later I got thirsty. So, I headed back to the truck. Got a few hits on the way back and dug 4 different bits of gold foil from a champagne bottle. Looked like it was going to be a trashy day.
I drove down the street to the gas station, picked up a Gatorade, paid, and was on my way.
Just then I got a phone call from my wife that she needed me at home. Reluctant, but knowing I could go back tomorrow, i drove home.
I started cleaning everything on my work bench and was pretty disappointed. Then, I started getting cleaned up. I went in the house, put my keys on the counter and pulled my change out of my pocket. There it was.... SILVER.
Change from the Gatorade was my find of the day!
Sorry for the long story, but that's about how the day felt. Either way, it was fun to be out there, and since it was 85 degrees today, my woods digging season is coming to a close quickly. Need to find some fields without all the poison ivy
