That is a beautiful relic but it is not from the civil war era. In 1894 Massachusetts was the first state to pass a law concerning the stamping of the word sterling. It became a national law in 1907. So your find, although very nice, is 1894 or later. Tennessee digger

I'm wondering if you have some sort of patriotic pin, maybe for a woman. The eagle on top looks like the middle 1850's type used, but the border on the badge looks a little bit femine. darn nice find, hope someone else will have some ideas.

Just by the writing on the back looks to be late late 19th century. I think Tennessee-Digger is right, it does appear to be 1890ish. Good find, hope you can 100% ID it. :occasion14:

I don't see any form of attachment or a place where an attachment might have been; therefore, it couldn't have been a pin/brooch/hat tack, etc. I'm thinking it was probably a charm for a bracelet, since it is only 1 inch tall, and a jewelry loop could have been attached at either wing space area. I don't think it was a necklace pendant/charm because it would not have hung level, but on charm bracelets, that is acceptable. Neat find :) Breezie

It is most likely a Spanish American War patriotic pin. i have one very similar that says "Remember the Maine" across the top.

Hi JimDon, Could you post a photo of the back of your pin? There are no attachment points on the back of Bart's ; therefore, his can't be a pin. :) Breezie

I agree with tennesse digger. During the civil war and prior sterling was simply not used as a marking
