It looks like a cigarette holder. Is one end a little flatter than the other?

Reminds me of a Jewish Prayer capsule that they would put on the front door jamb. :icon_scratch:

yea my guess would be cigar holder but it is pretty small for that although cigars come in many sizes. If my cigar was that small i would want to protect it from breaking.

This tube is by no means newer, this field was a farm site from the early 1700's to the late 1800's.Never found much newer stuff, except a few pulltabs, probably from the boys that mow.this is the northern section.Who would want to put a cap over the scrollwork.

Are both ends open or is/was it a closed container? I'd like to see pics of the ends, and also a pic of it in 2 pcs. I'm guessing it is about 4 inches long.

'If' both ends were originally closed, I agree with Kieser in that it is a needle case. If you Google: Sterling Chatelaine Needle Case or just Victorian Sterling Needle Case, you'll see hundreds very similar to yours. Nice find, Breezie

Now that we know it is only 2 1/2" long, there is no doubt in my mind it is a needle case like Kieser and Breezie said. I wish we had known the measurements from the beginning. I honestly "assumed" it was at least five or six inches in length. But you know what they say about assuming.

By the way, are there any indications where a small chain might have attached to both the body part and the cap? Many of those victorian type needle cases had lightweight chains on them.

Chris, Yeppers, now that we know the dimensions, it's a Victorian Sterling Needle Case. If there is evidence of an attachment at either end,(as Bob said), it is a Chatelaine Needle Case. Breezie

I'm going to agree with "Silver Pencil" on this one. Could also be a silver dip pen, or dip pen/pencil combo. Google them and you'll see some similar items, often monogrammed
