******SHORT STORY *****
Here is the short story if you don't want to read the long one below. I found the items below in the photos at a cellar hole site with two wells, I'm not sure if the thimble is silver or aluminium, and If anyone knows the age of any of these items it would be great if you could share your opinions thanks...

*****LONG STORY*****Yesterday I got out for my first hunt of the season, it was at an old abandoned stone well in the middle of the woods that actually still has snow in the bottom with a small dirt cellar about 200 ft away. The junipers made it very difficult to dig around the 10 ft deep well so I left the woods and stuck to the atv trail a few feet away from both well and cellar. The first good thing I got was an old bell after about a minute scanning the trail next to the well. It is actually a crotal bell with a style from India, it is sanded rough and also has an unusual mark on it. not sure how old it is either. After about two hours of being near the well I found a brass sleeve or cap of some kind and an iron bracelet with a brass rivet in the same hole. When digging up an old garden hoe an acquaintance of mine that partially owned the property showed up with his dog. Don't worry I know someone else who is in partial ownership of the land and they said I could dig anywhere on the huge property. Anyway he never knew about the well and he will cover it up with wood planks some time to make it safe. He in tern showed me another well he knew of just behind the cellar hole 200 ft away from the first well. Funny thing is I've been back there very close to it and I never knew it was there under the low junipers, it is covered but the wood is rotted and if I fell down this one I would more than likely die or get knocked unconscious because it is so deep, probably about 20 feet or more and can't see the bottom in the day light, though I can barley see the bottom with the camera flash. Anyway I detected the trail in between the deep well and the dirt cellar hole that are only 30 ft apart and found what I think is a really thin silver or aluminum thimble, there was also a shotgun shell and tin pieces in the same hole, I also found an iron buckle, a fancy brass two piece button and a broken clay pipe lying on the trail, everything was found on the trail except for the bracelet and the thin brass sleeve. overall it was a nice 5 hour hunt with lots of nice finds, minimal bugs and a week before the poison ivy blooms. I must say one of my favorite hunts ever. oh and also I'm not 100% sure if the thimble is silver i slightly opened the crushed thimble to see if there were any silver stamps, but nothing. If their is anyway to be certain that would be nice, and also again if you can date any of these items that would be nice.

Fascinating hunt! :hello2: Love the bell, button & thimble. :icon_thumright:

Good idea to take a friend next time in case you feel too tempted to explore the wells solo. Possibly either well could collapse & trap you even if you descended carefully on a rope! Andi

Coolfind, I think I saw china in that well lol

I will have to look harder for a marking than, it is squished so it makes it harder, the site is probably older than the 1880s, more than likely from the 1830s - 1850s.
Seeing no marks on the thimble tells you it isn't a sliver thimble from Britain after c.1884, the first year British silver of at least a sterling grade had to be marked appropriately.
Don.......

Excellent find. I hope to find a thimble one of these days.
