my bet they are the owners initials. have seen that on some other fork/spoon handles as well

I dont think it would be that old. Judging by the buttons and a tiny piece of a shoe buckle I found, I would say the site dates to 1790-1870 or somewhere close to those numbers.

Could be owners initials I had never thought of that.

All of the silverware I have found had the owners name, initials, hotel at the top where yours are located and the makers mark was on the thin side of the back of the handle. Yours was hand tooled or line chased. Lots of times silverware was handed down so it could be older. ( looks that way to me, colonial) Arty

Hey, I'm poor, I can't get away with that! ;D

Caesar si viveret, ad remum dareris.

No you most certainly can not do that on a public forum!

Dug this broken piece of a silver spoon or fork today. Does anyone know what it would date? And what the letters mean? I assume there a hallmark or makers mark. Looks like RGI with a star in there. Thank you for any help.

Not a fork, unless French.

18th century... style is "Georgian." After the Rev War the American silversmiths go for the coffin shape.

Initials are the owners.
