Silver Something? Water Pitcher?

Well I found this at a rummage sale, an elderly woman sold it to me for two bucks. It's not aluminum or tin from what I can tell, a powerful magnet will not stick to it, so it's either silver or aluminum but is too smooth and has brownish tarnish marks, not so easily scratched at all like aluminum.

That said, is it silver? Is it a water pitcher? Not sure. I don't even know if it's older or not, I doubt it though. Either way, any help appreciated! I didn't see any markings either. It's probably some cheap store pitcher but you never know.

Silver Spit test:
Spit on some aluminum foil, and rub it against the metal (the wet foil). Hold it in place for about 15-20 seconds. Then remove and SMELL IT. If it's a horrible nasty smell, you've got silver. If you're curious about the exact smell, go grab a known piece of silver and try it. It'll stink to high heaven. Then try it on a stainless steel or other metal spoon or something. No smell (other than your spit, of course. :) ).

Easiest silver test I know of. I use this in the field with aluminum gum wrappers if necessary.

yes, it works.. no, I'm not punking you.

If you want to check if it's Pewter, rub it across a piece of paper. If it leaves a gray trail (similar to a pencil mark), it's probably pewter. Silver doesn't do that.

OMG it does work lol. And thanks to that, I found that it's likely pewter, definitely not silver. Left a pencil trail easily.

Thanks so much for that, very interesting fact as well!

Thanks for the disgusting chemistry lesson! If you don't mind, if I need to decide between silver and pewter, I think I'll try the second test first! :tongue3:
