I have not been to many of my favorite sites; they are waiting until the Fall. Their have been some recent outings that have been productive. A silver toe ring from The Shore, a Mercury Dime from an old school site, a Flying Eagle from a former farm and a Large Cent that was only 3 inches deep from a "hunted out" park.

More finds coming soon...I hope!

I have definitley enjoyed reading your website over the winter months... I was just curious if you were going to clean up that flying eagle? I dug up a 1787 new jersey cent yesterday and its in about the came condition...

What I have found it that when it comes to Flying Eagle cents, as well as early Indian Heads (1859-1864), what you dig is what you get. They do not clean up very well because of their high nickel content.

Here is a photo of the coin "cleaned up":

Here is one I found earlier this year that was only lightly rinsed in distilled water:

You should definitely post your NJ copper in any condition. There are many people, including myself, who would love to see it.

Its in pretty rough shape, I've actually been thinking of taking it to my jeweler friend who will put it through an electrolysis treatment. i was able to make out parts of the shield before the distilled water bath... after the bath if i hold a flashlight to it sideways i can see the horse and plow and the word caeser, still cant get a date off of it and have been comparing it to the maris plates.

I will have pics up of it by this weekend when i get to use a macro lens on a good digital SLR...

You should try a hot peroxide bath. That is what the experienced people on the forum use to clean old coppers. For more details on the technique, here is the link:

Nice finds! Yeah, soon the fields will be harvested and wide open dig'n.

The flying eagle is my favorite coin of all time. I hope to find one one day. Good finds and thanks for sharing.

Not too shabby Neil. Will fall ever get here? ;D I must go and prepare my basement for the flood that will ensue from this dang hurricane.

Nice Coin Finds ;D
Condition depends on the microclimate where found, as you know.
You can pull a beauty 25 feet from a toasty..
The best ones I get come from the sandy loam areas found up here.
The worst are from ash dumps

Two of mine came from old farm fields, so you never know!
