Hi all. This is not a detecting find from today, BUT I did find it again today. Last summer during my " banned camp" period ( yes, I got into a heated argument with a mod and after many repeated warnings from him, off to camp I went, lol ), I hunted a graveled parking lot at a nearby high school. Besides lots of clad, I found my very first gold~a broken necklace or bracelet and the ring that is the subject of this post. When I found it, I was excited because I thought it was silver. Once I got home, the gf said she did not believe it was silver and when I spread the finds out on my patio so I could wash them off with the hose, the pressure sent the ring off flying into the grass somewhere. Since I thought all women were experts in recognizing precious metals, I wasn't too concerned and forgot about it because I was concentrating on looking at the gold.
This morning I walked across my patio and there was the little ring again! I probably got it with the weed whacker yesterday and it threw it back where it started, lol. Sorry for the novel, but I wanted to explain the long awaited test. The other day I read you can check for silver by wetting the object and wrapping it in aluminum foil. I immediately thought to do this today and I could hear the tell tale crackling sound when I held it to my ear and the gf also heard it.
This is the pic from last year after being found

And these are today after a quick clean with toothpaste and toothbrush.

The ring only had some tarnish this morning. It weighs 2.7 grams and has no hallmark. Does anyone know of any other tests that can be done except the standard acid tests to check for silver content? Thanks for looking.

Looks silver.no plating chipping bent easily a good solder linking the bands id say good old 925

Grats man :)

Thanks! I have been waiting until I had enough silver to buy a test kit. This is the only piece without a silver mark that I think might be silver. All my others say 925 or sterling.

Looks n sounds legit to me!

Thanks. I read about the aluminum foil test here. Apparently it is some form of electrolysis. If this does turn out to be silver, the test apparently works!:icon_thumright:

If it cleaned up like that, then its likely silver... A test you can do is the match test. (Take a match place it on a flat plane of the silver. Light it and let it burn the entire tip of the match. Blow it out, it will leave a black stain. If the stain stays and won't wipe off with anything but vinegar then its likely real.) If the stain just wipes off without vinegar then its likely fake.

Keep @ it and HH !! :hello2:

Thanks Mud....that's a new one on me! I knew someone here would know more tests:icon_thumright:

Just run it by Blingie! He tried to jump into the screen when he saw the pic of it! ;)

I'd heard the aluminum foil test also gives a rotten egg smell when it's silver. Hope it is!

No silver or jewelry expert OD but I like it. HH, Q.

Thanks Mr. Q. Glad to see you weathered the storms there. Be safe! MM sent me an extra copy of your book Taking Southern Trails Home. Very good read. You're quite the story teller! I imagine those days had many stories to tell. Thanks for looking and your post.

I don't remember the egg smell. I only left the ring in long enough to listen to the crackling sound. The gf said it reminded her of the sound of pop rocks, lol. I don't have matches to try MUD's suggestion. I did try the foil test again this morning but didn't hear anything or smell anything, lol. I wonder if the toothpaste took enough tarnish off to cause the foil to not work again?

I got a small test kit and it's helped immensely. Actually was pretty cheap AND, it came with a small, electronic gold scale! You're going to get items you are unsure about and maybe even a little embarrassed to ask a professional about. (Feels kinda dumb when all they do is giggle. LOL )

I know eventually I will buy a kit, but at the moment, I have no plans to sell anything anyway, so there is no hurry.

Silver Testing the backwoods way:

Back in the 80's, there was this lady what was covered head to toe with silver jewelry. She must have had 20 pounds of silver on her. She was a regular customer at a coffee shop I frequented. Back then, Drinking Coffee and Smoking was a social event. Not so much anymore.

None the less, She would frequently clean her silver with a damp cloth and ashes from her cigarette. The reaction is unique to silver and for me, identifies junk metal from dirty or tarnished silver. Now I wouldn't recommend this for your finest Tiffany Silver, but as a filed test, I swear by it and will use it any time I have doubt in the field whether I dug silver or Silver colored junk. If you don't smoke, preferred if you like living, then you probably won't have much use for this method, and I don't recommend you start smoking so that you have ashes around for this purpose. Just Saying.....

Thanks MPG, but I quit cold turkey 8 or 9 years ago, and at 1 1/2 packs per day x whatever they are now?!? I am gonna buy a test kit, lol. That's one reason I can afford this money losing hobby, lol! I shall remember your suggestion though.
