Silver Ring Marking : "SILVER 06" ?

Found this down about 6" deep at my favorite beach. It came out encrusted with green crud and I had expectations of another junk ring.

I gave it a shot in my vinegar/aluminum bath (with a touch of salt). Well, it stank like Silver and cleaned up as being Silver. I suspect it's an oldtimer as this part of the beach has had sand removed and renewed with the berm construction. I have picked up 30's Mercs and lots of old wheaties.

Two strange things about this ring: First, it's marked on the outside and second, it's marked "SILVER 06" ... odd for sure.

I'm hoping we have someone on here who has seen this before or knows what it means. I do have an opinion but will keep it to myself for a little while.

HH Joe

SOLVED: Think it means "90" (upside down) 90% Silver or Coin Silver

:hello:

Judging by what you said :P about it being covered with Green crud, and seing the picture of the ring, I would say that it is a Copper Alloy Ring that has been Silver dipped.
No idea what the Mark means :dontknow:

My first thoughts were the same. Definitely doesn't look like solid silver in the photo and the green "crud" would signify copper or copper alloy.

OK ..time for my opinion.

I think the "06" is actually an upside down "90" which would make it 90% and "coin Silver."

I'm sorry I didn't get a photo when it was ugly green but I really didn't expect Silver but rather copper.

Here's a photo of the top of the ring. The copper highlights, I believe come from my cleaning process.

The Other photo has another ring which I believe is also 90% Silver although it's just marked "Made in Mexico." It was found a couple years ago in a salt marshy landfill site. I first thought it was a copper fitting of some sort but was happily surprised to find it was Silver. The new ring looked very similar in color and corrosive buildup.

Re: Silver Ring Marking : "SILVER 06" ?

Early silver pieces didn't have to be stamped with fineness (like .900 or .925). 06 sounds like it could be the last of a year, as in SILVER (19)06. Doesn't make too much sense. If you could stamp it 06, why not stamp it 1906?
