Hello all, Been rabidly detecting anbd collecting coins for 25 years but here is a question I could never figure out.....

In 1794-1795 you can find silver dollars that have adjustment marks on them because they used to file off excess silver from an overweight planchet. On underweight planchets they sometimes put a silver plug in the middle of the planchet to make it the right weight.

Can someone please tell me how a silver plug being added to an already silver planchet is going to increase the weight?? ???

Happy hunting and collecting all!

Greg

Hi,
Dollar coins of those years were composed of a silver composition that amounted to .8924 silver. Adding a plug of .999 silver would increase the total ampont of silver a very slight amount. The plug would be made to change the silver content to whatever was required by law.

I hope that helps.
Bill
