Hmm..I was the service as well and mine does not say Sterling on the back so I think you may be right about them changing the composition. I got out in 2004 just for a time frame reference, sorry if I caused any confusion, wish mine was Sterling! Furthermore, there may be different types out there. The non subdued version is nickel plated. I can see older ones having a higher silver content due to silver being less expensive than it is now.
