Hello treasurenet,

I recently got into prospecting and went down a wash near the 395 hwy norcal. The wash runs alongside a river and theres tons of galena type of dark gray rocks that flake off when broken. My detector kept going off under these huge river rocks, not around it, not om the surface, but underneath which confirms it isn't slag. I was able to get one piece with the limited resources i had but i know for a fact there's plenty more there. Any suggestions as to what this is? It weighs 14 grams.

It looks like melted aluminum, but take it to a jeweler for a silver test just to be on the safe side.

Hey man.I am quite newb as well.Photo1840.webpPhoto1841.webp This is silver and recent for me too. Yours also looks like silver to me. I have found quite a few aluminium fire nuggets with my detector.None of them looked like that. Hope its silver for you dude. Nice. I thought this was some melted garbage as well.It wasn't until I got home and looked under a loupe and saw garnets on the bits of rock in the nugget.Had it not been for them,I wouldn't have even bothered testing it. Just thought it was metalwork/fire trash.
So goodluck

For the size I'd go with melted aluminum and being from a wash it could of been deposited from numerous storm runoffs.

I wouldn't rule out whether it was melted aluminum if it wasn't under those big flaky dark/gray rocks that stretched all over across the wash. It seems like those minerals were there for years and years. Every time my metal detector went off it was under those rocks and not around it or on the surface so it makes me think otherwise..

Sigh, no one's ever said to me.

You should try scrubbing it with an iron brush to get it more define. That's what i did. Unless you like the natural look of it, that is.

I took it to a pawn shop, said it isn't silver. They think it could be pewter but they aren't sure. I did the ice test, ice melts really fast. I tried bending it as hard as i can, doesn't break or bend. Held a lighter to it for a minute, doesn't tarnish or have any sign of melting. I think and want it to be.. palladium.. it's light in weight for it's size too.. i will take it to a refinery and update everyone when i can. Wish me luck guys.

Acid test time.

If you found it close to a road or hwy it's more than likely a blob from a car fire. I'd bet a magnesium alloy. If you go back to that spot look up stream & you'll likely find a good scorch mark. Or like in my case you stumbled on a dump spot the drug smugglers burned the cars they stole to get rid of evidence.

Thanks for the heads up. Will try asking a refinery

No bridge nearby.

Aa I've mentioned, this was found underneath a large river bedrock that looks like it's been there for many years. The same river bedrock stretching across the whole wash.
