I recently purchased this silver bowl at a second hand store. The tag on the bottom says: James W Tufts, Boston, then there is a "T" in a star shape, then quadruple plate, 2839 then there are additional 2 letters or a letter and a number. The fruit emblems have been pounded up from the bottom. The handle is a silver rope style with ornamental leaves on it. The marking is from 1875-1900 (?) I would like to know what this bowl is (fruit, sugar, bread) and what the value of this may be. I've seen some Tuft silver plate for $400-1200. This bowl (carrier) is 5" wide and 6 1/2" tall.

Some history:
James Walker Tufts was born 11 Feb 1835, Charlestown, MA,and died 3 Feb 1902, Pinehurst, NC. The silverware factory was actually founded in 1875 and ended in 1915.

James actually made his fortune as the manufacturer of a soda fountain and, because of ill health (asthma) he moved his family to North Carolina and founded Pinehurst - today renowned as the birthplace of golf in North America.

You scored a good one there.

A similar one but not as ornate as yours is listed on rubylane.com for over 1000.00

Goodwill.com sold a sugar bowl for 36.00 and a small bowl is selling on fleabay for about 400.00

Yours should easily sell in the 1200.00 range.

No kidding!?! I saw that pic and it reminded me of a piece I have in the back of my cabinet. I just dragged it out and it is a Tufts bowl, too. Not as fancy, but similar markings on the bottom.

Thanks for the information. I really appreciate it. Can anyone tell me "what type" of basket this is? Are there many of these baskets just like this out there?
