Hehe... I feel like such a nerd for doing this, but I found it profitable and fun.
About two months ago my fiancee and I moved to northern Massachusetts and soon decided to visit the moneypit splendor that is Foxwoods casino in CT. It was fun, lost money, and that was that.
Soon after, our budget became a little tight (No correlation, I promise )and I could not purchase the amount of silver that I like to each month for a personal investment. SO... the idea dawned on her that we could go to the casino that had half dollar machines, buy a bunch at once, and search through them, pulling the silvers out.
Needless to say, I was sceptical. How would the casino react if they found out that we, in fact, were not gambling? Does that make me a freak for even doing it in the first place?
Well, we went, and I was soon hooked. We would each go to the counter, purchase $100 in halves, and find a machine that took them. We would then print out the handy ticket from the machine, cash it, and walk to the next casino/room in the resort.
We did a total of 5 rounds that evening, (five cashier's counters in each round) and spent about 5 hours at the casino, for a total of 32 silver halves, including 3 Franklins, 1 1918 w. liberty, and 4 1964 halves ( 90 % silver content versus 40% of the 65-70). We got some free drinks in the process, heard some good music, and all the while had a blast together.
We have gone once a week for the last 5 weeks, and have continued our sucess ( no liberty's though). We normally stay five or so hours, and have never found less than 25.
I know that this is not really a 'treasure,' and may not be 'hunting,' but I figured I would share it with you all. The drive for us is 2 hours each way, and with winter coming up, we will not be going down to CT often. Hourly, the money made versus effort is not much, and finances are back on the upswing for us. Back to conventional means of hoarding! So hopefully some of YOU all decide to make money at the casinos! Any place that still used coins (versus tickets and bills) should work.
