Found an amazing location that may be untouched. It was a church (one wall left), cemetary (some headstones left), schoolhouse (gone) and blacksmith shop (gone) all in an area about 100 yards by 50 yards. Part is developed, but much is woods. I had about an hour and a half to search last Sunday before I left on a trip and found these two coins pictured. Half reale (late 1700s?) -- as I explained earlier, one side is worn flat and other is described in my other post such that diggummup posted the exact example. The Coronet cent date is unreadable except 18__ . These coins were found about 20 feet apart and not very deep. There's also an old road running through part of which is still there and available to detect. I have only covered a fraction of this area in the time I had. Just got back from my trip and it's very cold here in NY, but will be going out as soon as we get 40 degrees or higher. Sorry the photo stinks. I have tried every possible angle and lighting. With reale coin on left you can see "gold looking glare" that outlines crown at top of coin and shield in middle. Here's link to my other post where a better picture of the same coin has been posted by diggummup. If anyone has idea of approx. date of the half reale based on photo at link below (see coin with hole), please advise. Thank you.

Sounds like a good site to work over thoroughly.

HH

Looks like the site will be very interesting.....Looks like the lights may have been a problem in the Pic.....Nice going !!! Seeker

When I used more lighting the silver reflected it all back at the camera and it was worse (even at different angles and even with the "flower" setting). I need a better camera or a scanner. Coronet cent needs to be cleaned to see anything anyway.

Keep all lighting to the side or behind you. If it is the flash causing it make the room dark and take at a slight angle. Works for me. Congrats on the finds. HH Burdie

Nice finds and congrats on the old silver! HH, Mike

I should mention that I use a basic radio shack/bounty hunter and still find lots of good stuff like this, so chalk one up for the lower end detectorists. One of these days I will upgrade. It's more a comfort level I have with the detector than money.

Nice finds...I would really like to find some old spanish coins. ?When taking closeup of coins I usually turn the flash off and I have an option (which you may have and not know) that is for close up shots...my camera has a mignifying glass as the icon for this option. The manual for your camera would show you. ?Thanks for the pics and story.

Awesome find Bergie!

;)

Great find's icebergie....Definetley turn the flash off ....My little digital kinda suck's so I'll put a magnifying glass up to the lens and tweek it with the macro setting..work's most of the time..HH!!....Poor man's photography..

Great find IceBergie. Sounds like a fantastic location. I'm envious. Please keep us posted.

I usually cover the flash with a piece of cloth for close shots. That way, it still illuminates well, but the flash isn't so bright that it glares.

Thanks, all. I am getting up early in the morning and going back to the spot. I don't care how cold it is. I have a hammer and chisel and there's some leaf and pine needle cover that should help insulate the ground, but if I have to chisel it I will. We have possible 8 + inches of snow coming in the afternoon/eve so I have to get some more done in the morning or it could be days/weeks.

Even though I can't see them ;) those are really nice coins, Berg. Good luck. Hope you find more.

I can't wait to see what you might find there next time.Good luck and nice finds. Vern :)
