"silver ground finds and condition"

Hi all, nearly all the silver coins i have found this year except 5 have come out of the ground looking like this.each one of the below examples were found in different locations and ground types. Also have had different range of destructive elements..Won,t go into totals effects but the info given with each sample will give you an idea of what may have affected the silver. All coins only beween 90 to 70 years old and all are 97 % silver.

1 open clean ground [no activity]

2 crop feild

3 under trees

4 naturestrip and footpath

5 bottom of drying up lake

6 burnt dump

7 historic park

Less than 9 % of my coin finds come out of any ground in reasonable condition. The copper are even more stuffed. Your thoughts please

I have found silver like that I felt it had to be the minerals in the soil but I am no expert. Like your Posts.

Re: "silver ground finds and condition"

The one Roman silver coin I've found was 1900 years old and looks the same. So once the corrosion layer forms, it usually doesn't get much worse (with silver). Copper can go much quicker, since the copper coins found in the same area were really bad. The bronze coin was about like the silver.

Water is the probably the main problem. It allows dissolved ions (from the minerals in the ground) to react with the metals in the coins.

thanks for the input, australia is one of the dryest places on earth so that takes out major water factor.
