DAY 1
I went back to the middle school to clean up some more sections and see what is hiding in the ground. I spent 5.5 hours with the CZ21 and found 53 coins with a face value if $2.99, a wheatie, a Canadian centennial cent, jewelry, a zipper pull, a piece of a toy vehicle, a brass pipe connection, copper wire and flashing, bits of aluminum, a chunk of lead, aluminum bottle caps, 37 tabs and 11 pencil ends.
The scrap metal is probably as valuable as the coins on this hunt. A good bit of copper and brass and even a heavy chunk of lead.
DAY 2
I went to the private school hoping for some nicer new losses. I spent 5 hours swingin the CZ21 and found 80 coins with a face value of $4.57, a key, some jewelry, a wheatie (1950D), part of a grenade, a combination lock dial, can slaw, copper wire, 27 tabs, 3 pencil ends and 26 aluminum bottle caps (many more bottle caps than normal).
The jewelry was a simple aluminum pendant and a cheapie ball earrings with the post mashed down onto the ball.
The grenade part is the fuze. I have found a half a dozen of these things over the years. Strangely they have all been at schools. There is no reason for there to be a grenade at school unless some kid found the piece and brought it to school and lost it.
DAY 3
I took a trip to the park closest to my house. I go there about once a year these days. I have covered most of the best spots and just go to look for new losses. This trip I remembered a section that I had not covered and gridded it. I was glad I did. It is part of the football field. Over the past 15 to 20 years I have covered most of the field and found a 1722 Woods Hibernia farthing, and my only flying eagle cent. I haven’t worked on this field for about 5 years and I still have a small part left to do.
I spent 5 hours with the CZ21 and found 77 coins with a face value of $4.75, a silver coin, a sinker, key charms, toy car parts, toy cars, whole aluminum cans, can slaw, a few bottle caps and 19 tabs.
The silver coin breaks my drought (I haven’t found silver since March 31st and that one was a trime). It was small and thin in the plug, but it looked pretty slick. I could tell it was silver and was hoping it was Spanish. I rubbed a tiny bit of baking soda on parts of it to help bring out the details. Too much and it gets shiny and the details are harder to see, but too much tarnish and the details are hard to read as well. (First picture is before baking soda) You can see the CA of Carolus and the outline of the left side of the bust with the pony tail. If you look closely you can see the 1 in the date and if I’m not mistaken a 7 after the 1 and a 6 on the end. You can also see 2 Roman numeral I’s on the upper left.
On the other side you can see the PAN and dot of HISPAN so definitely a Spanish half reale made between 1772 and 1808 if my information is correct. Before 1772 the back was a pillar and wave design and it didn’t have the HISPAN and dot. If my eyes are correct it would be a 1776, 1786 or 1796. So either a Charles the 3rd or 4th. The poor thing has seen hard use, but it is silver and old so no complaints. Yeah silver at last.
The fields were full of dandelions as you can see and this little butterfly posed nicely for me.
I’ll be at the beach for 5 days swingin as often as I can. Hopefully a few goodies will turn up, but there is a lot of beach from Rehoboth to the southern end of Ocean City so more misses than hits. Wish me luck. Thanks for looking, stay safe, good luck and may your coil lead you to good things.
