Could be anointing oil in the container, other than that I have no help.

It is up to you, but if I found it, I would arrange with the priest to have a meeting & return it.

Me being Catholic I say contact the Monsignor. A*container that small could have been lost by a member of the church or the clergy, either way the Church would want that back. And for doing the right thing you will be blessed on your future metal detecting excursions.

The church closed up in the 1960s. There is no other catholic church in the area. All that is left on this site is the church building and the owner is tearing it down.

The church was built in the 1880s. Just having a hard time finding the hallmark to date this. It would be great to be able to return it to someone but all the old members past away or moved on. Its a shame is old built is going to be tore down. It is a beautiful brick church. The school and houses are already gone.

I'm sure any Catholic Church would accept it. But if you decide to keep it you can dab the knuckle on your right index finger in the blessed holy oil balm and mark the sign of the cross on your forehead, any spot that ails you or someone else,

I found that when you become proficient with a metal detector the finds become less important. It becomes not about take, take, take, keep keep, keep. That find is IMO only worth its weight in silver but much more to a Catholic person. I don't fault you if you keep it because I haven't always tough like this.

Its all about the history for me. It will go to the local historical society to display with items from area churches instead of leaving the county.
