On Sunday, I went digging with my friend to a site that he first hunted 40 years ago. It’s a big gathering area, rustic with woods and a lake that was used from about the late 1880’s through the present. He did pretty good there on coins in the past. We decided to strike out for part of the property that is “off the beaten path.” We figured that even 100 years ago, people would have fanned out for some more intimate hiking, picnics, and special “relations” time (he found a Three Merry Widows tin on our hunt, so our instincts were spot on).
We were finding stuff, nothing great, until we reached the crest of a point overlooking the lake. We discovered an untouched honey hole with coins, jewelry, and other random items. I pulled four silver coins on the day including a SLQ, Barber dime, 1964 Roosevelt, and a War nickel. I also dug a handful of old wheats and a 1907 Indian. My favorite find was a sterling silver spoon ring that was hand-etched! It has a Native American design that I absolutely love AND it fits perfectly! Definitely one of my favorite finds of this year.
My friend got a 1964 Roosie also, 2 Indians, some wheats, a Tootsie car, a gold plated ring, and an old deco-style bracelet with 11(!!) leaves. When he dug the first leaf of the bracelet, he had had some trouble finding it because we were in real leaves and, well you know, it looked like a leaf. It was a good hunt to end the 2019 digging year.
