Got in a good two hours on the same field today and it was a cool 33F/1C. Was digging it all and most targets were faint and junk sounding. Here’s the finds. A puzzle of pieces that I thought was a French Fleur de lis. The pieces kept popping up here and there widely scattered.

A harmonica reed in two pieces, found several others again not pictured. A beat up copper thimble, a lead headless horseman, a crusty aluminum religious medallion, an aluminum seal, a piece of the pewter bell I found yesterday and the back of the bell is gone and some kind of harness decoration, has two pins on the reverse, have found three of these.
23Dec06relics1.jpg

A harness collet, a large bronze buckle, a strap buckle, a smaller harness collet, a buckle with the pin intact, a button, a souvenir for a cane or walking stick with no markings and a button.

A cheap ring in the middle with two glass stones and missing the middle stone, looked for it in the dirt but did not find it. I think the large brooch thing is a harness decoration, came out in pieces, it has small roses with stems on the oval part of what remains of the enameling.

Obverse of four coins, a 1921 aluminum 50 Pfennig, an 1874 silver 20 Pfennig, an 1898 copper 1 Pfennig and a 1941 aluminum 50 Pfennig.

Hi Mike,

Nice finds. I have a question. At one time I was stationed in Bavaria at Erlangen Germany. I spent 3 years at Ferris Barracks while with the U.S. army. Do you known of anyone metal detecting around where the old barracks are? These barracks go back to before World War I, I believe the 1890's? Thousands and thousands of solders have been stationed there over the last hundred years, so there has to be thousands of coins burried. Would the German government allow anyone to detect this area?

Thanks for the nice comments! Hey Sonoma Mike, I detect around the military posts where I work without any problems. Hard to detect these sites knowing the old stuff is out there, 1890s is just not very old here, LOL, seems I find an 1875 coin most hunts! I do enjoy an occasional clad hunt on the posts. The Erlangen/Nurenberg area closed down a few years ago, there may be a small detachment there these days. HH, Mike
