Went back to the church picnic area that is littered with pulltabs and decided to check around in the woods adjacent to the picnic area. Got this 1917-S Walker half, 1899 Liberty nickel, and a token that says Walnut Hills High School Towel Check. All were in the same hole. Went 21 years without ever finding a half dollar, now I've found 7 this year and 4 of those are silver walkers!! Also found a lighter and finally became a member of the old padlock club.

That token is cool. Have you thought of going to a local historical society to get an age on it? I'd say it can't be any earlier than atleast the 40's

Great going on the Walker! The V nickel and token are nice too!

There is a Walnut Hills High School about 70 miles away from me in Cincinnati OH. According to their website they have been open since 1895, and in their current location since 1931. I found the token in the same hole as the 1917 Walker, so probably 20's to 40's timeframe. I'll have to do some more research on it!!

anybody ever try to metal detect the areas in the hills around cincy where the old civil war batteries and mini forts used to be? theres a whole bunch of them. been looking to try and do this. (originially from cincy, still have family there)

Nice coins and such, but in your "junk" piole I think you have found a turn of the 20th fishing reel. If it is, it's definately worth cleaning up. Real collectors item!

Don't know if anybody has ever detected any of those or not, but would definitely be worth looking into!!

Yep, that is a fishing reel, and it actually still spins. Thanks for the info, I'll definitely have to clean it up and try and do some research on it!!

From it's lack of a level winder it's obviously quite old. The level wind was an early 20th century invention. Usually reels from that era are made from either cupro-nickle (german silver) or they are chrome on brass. I'm not really sure of the make, but would make a nice restoration project.
