I found my 18th silver this year and a nice collection of nickels today. I searched a remote section of an old park. All the coins came from under a large stand of trees and were in a carpet of pull tabs! Today's finds include:
1905 Liberty nickel
1926, 1928, 1934, 1935, and a no date Indian head nickel
1946 Wheat cent
1951 Roosevelt dime

Excellent.I still am waiting to find my first silver.

Wow! Look at all those buffs. Did you have a pouch full of pull tabs as well? There is no differentiating between the two on my e trac. Great hunt!

I use a White's XLT. I'm getting better at identifying the tone and VDI for nickels. Lot's of fun when other targets are scarce! Thanks, H Digs!

My prior machine was a Whites Spectrum XLT. I used it for around 13 years and it still functions like the first day I got it. Awesome machine! My only complaint was its depth. Are you able to hit deep targets?

Most older coins I find are 4"-8" deep. As far as deep coins, in the discriminate mode, I find nickels 6"-7", pennies and dimes 8", quarters 8"-10", large cents and half's 10"+. Mixed Mode is the deepest way to search and when I use it, I don't worry about missing anything. I don't know what all the other machines can do, but I think the XLT can hold it's own with the best of them. :)

That's excellent depth. I was lucky to get 4 inches out of mine with any coin! I think soil mineralization could play a big part in that though. I would be 100% satisfied with the depth your getting.

I have an Etrac too and I do pretty well with nickels. Most actual pull-tabs (with a ring and tab) come in higher than nickels on the Conductive number like at least 17 or higher. Most of my nickels come in under 13 conductive although they tend to jump around. I have noticed when I see jumping numbers if I see a 12-12, 13-13 or even a 09-09 it's usually a nickel. 17 and higher I skip. I have several Jeffersons , 6 Buffaloes and 2 V-nickels. I really only started digging the decent nickel signals a couple months ago. The only ones that sound a lot like nickels are the newer pop-tabs that have to be broken off the can or the older pull-tabs with the just the tab and no ring: they tend to mimic the nickel numbers more closely than a full pull-tab. Hope this helps.

Your XLT should do the same. I recommend sending it back to White's in Sweet Home, OR for a check up. I have sent mine back twice in the last 14 years. They treat you like a million dollars and will up date your machine to better than new. Your eTrack is also an excellent machine, certainly a match for the XLT. "Sovereignelite" posted some helpful tips on getting the most out of your Minelab and digging more of those elusive nickels! H Digs! :)
