Silly question about Florida beaches and 1715 fleet

Hi Folks,

I'm taking my kids to Florida for a week. I've been given one day to take off and do whatever I want.

I'd like to try hunting a beach where there is the possibility I might find a coin from one of the Spanish wrecks. I've been on-line and have looked at various maps but am still basicaly lost.

I don't want to break any laws.

Can anybody suggest a location that is legal to beach hunt with a metal detector where I might find a coin?

I know that finding a coin or a cob is a very long shot, but I'm prepared to sacrifice the day and chalk it up as exercise and experience. :-)

Any comments appreciated.

Unfortunately, the 1715 beaches are not really producing right now. Part of the reason is it's the wrong time of year, another reason is the local govts just dumped tons of sand on the beaches to "renourish" them, raising the sand level up 3-4 feet.

To make it a fun day, you could metal detect the area of the 1715 Corrigans wreck, on A1A in Indian River Shores. This beach may be your best bet right now. Detect close to the water's edge. There are 2 beach accesses about 1 mile apart south of the Disney World Vero Beach Resort (an easy to find landmark). Seagrape beach access is at 27.44.40.20/80.23.11.95 and Turtle Trail beach access is at 27.44.02.11/80.22.56.47 (hope you have Google earth or GPS)

Then later on you can visit the McLarty treasure museum, about 8 miles north on A1A, which was built on one of the salvage camps of the 1715 fleet. Only cost a dollar but worth the visit. The Mel Fisher Treasure museum is also close by on the mainland.

PM me if you have more questions of need specific directions.

Its legal to hunt the beaches, but not in the water with an MD. I agree with the above, I just got back into the
sport/hobby and corrigans between Sea Grape and Turtle Access does look like the best at this time of year and conditions.

Just got a Minelab SE and am out there on weekends learning the machine!

As mentioned above, Both museums are worth the time! And are full of information!

Good Luck!

Excellent, thanks for the directions to Corrigan's wreck and the other sites. I have Google earth and can print the images. I really appreciate that :-)

We are staying at a resort in Orlando with another family. The group is big enough that I can get away on my own for a day (maybe even two) to go beach hunting. For me, just spending day hunting the beach dreaming of finding a cob is a good thing. I expect I will check out the museum as well.

If I happen to find a cob, or get struck by lightning, I'd be sure to post pictures of either event :-)

Thanks for you help!

Disney has a Beach Resort only 1 block south of Wabasso beach

Being its legal to the water line, stay with the low tide! Comes in fast, so an hour plus
before the low tide mark is best! Comes in fast!
You'll see the sand line and difference where the new sand was dropped.
